Oliver Signy

RACING CLUB

A fun and affordable way to get involved with National Hunt racing

The Oliver Signy Racing Club was relaunched in September 2023 with the aim of being one of the most competitively priced clubs in the country. By Christmas all three horses in the new club – Decorated, Mad About Sally and Rolling River – had all won races.

By the end of the season we had won a bumper, novice and handicap hurdles, and a handicap chase giving members real variety in the days out racing. In the 2022/23 season were 18 runs from the three horses, operating at 28% strike rate with 50% of all runners placing 1st-3rd. The club guarantees 3 horses running for the racing club so there are plenty of chances to go racing. This season Berkshire Lad, Mad About Sally and Nearly Got Away. will be representing the club. The club runs as a membership, so there are no hidden extras and good communication with regular updates through The Racing Manager, which gives each member their own individual log-in on the desktop and app.

Mad About Sally

A tough mudlark winning mare – rated 115

‘Sally’ was sourced from Ireland by bloodstock agent Marcus Collie, who felt there was interesting form and potential to train on in Lambourn. She was already placed in Irish Point-to-Points, so we were confident in her jumping and ability to stay on.

She has had a great run of results during the last three seasons, placing in three runs on the bounce in 2022 and has won over both hurdles and fences. She’s a very tough mare who is straightforward and professional at home and on the racecourse. Her debut chase was impressive but she has continued to improve with her best performance at Chepstow last season, winning well again under Ben Jones. She was enjoying her spin around Cheltenham and we can forgive her weakening in the closing stages as a later scan showed she had injured a tendon.

We contemplated retiring Sally but we treated her legs to keep her options open and they are looking and feeling so good that it seems a waste to send her pointing, although she would be a fantastic schoolmistress for a young jockey! She has gotten better with each season for us and we believe that with her tough attitude and love of softer ground there are more races in her – and hopefully some more trips to the winners enclosure!

Sally has a workable mark and is versatile over both tight and staying tracks so there are plenty of race options for her this season. She’s a resilient mare who enjoys getting stuck in and who tries hard on every outing. She excels against the mares and will be targeting mares chases on soft to heavy ground over the coming winter.

Berkshire Lad

A rangy young horse who is just starting out in his career

‘Lad’ was purchased as an unbacked store horse from the Goffs May Sale in 2023 and was backed before having a break. He had a couple of growth spurts through the year and was supplemented into the Racing Club in early 2024. He is a lovely character who is straightforward at home with a good attitude towards his work. He stays on well round the ‘Back of the Hill’ a proper National Hunt gallop which finds out horses who do not have good stamina.

He was very green in his debut bumper run but will have learned a lot for the outing and will be back this season as a much stronger four year old. He will be aimed at another bumper and will likely start novice hurdling after Christmas once he has more experience and a couple more runs under his belt.

Nearly Got Away

As his name suggests he almost slipped the net but was destined for Lambourn

Ollie first met ‘Ned’ on a scouting trip to Ireland, he was being trained round the back of an industrial estate and there was something about his workman like attitude and demeanor that stood out. At around 16h he is a compact, strong model with plenty of bone.

He joined the team last summer but picked up an unlucky injury after getting kicked in the field which stopped him having a run last season.

Ned has run in three Irish point to points, placing 4th on two occasions before pulling up on his third attempt on ground which was quicker than he fancied as a five year old. Having had a break over the winter he comes into the season as a strong six year old, who we know stays and jumps well.

He should be a ready to go type and the plan is to gain a mark over hurdles, ideally in a timely manner and progress through to the 3 mile chasing. He has an incredibly tough attitude and if he stays on as strongly as we believe then we could see him stepping up to the extended distances.
